Update: Modesto man killed in Highway 99 crash Sunday morning. Racing reportedly involved

California Highway Patrol

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash on Highway 99 in Modesto on Sunday morning that may have involved racing.

The high-speed crash into a tree occurred minutes before 6 a.m. on northbound 99 north of Woodland Avenue.

A 21-year-old Modesto resident, Ramiro R. Lopez Trevino, was driving a 2002 Volvo S20 in the fast lane when he lost control, crossed all northbound lanes of traffic, went onto the shoulder and then struck a tree, according to a CHP news release.

Trevino did not survive the impact, the release says. He was wearing his seat belt but the impact was such that it would have made little difference “had he not been restrained at the time of this crash,” it says.

It has not been determined if alcohol and/or drugs factored in the crash.

Preliminary reports indicated Trevino was racing another vehicle when the crash occurred. Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash is urged to call the CHP office in Modesto, at 209-54507440 and ask for Officers Norseen or Mitchell.
