Wrong-way driver who died in Highway 99 crash identified as Turlock man
The wrong-way driver who died in a fiery crash on Highway 99 early Tuesday has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as a Turlock man.
Armando Beltran, 54, was driving a sedan south in the northbound lanes near Lander Avenue when he crashed head-on with a northbound Tesla at 3:17 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Beltran’s vehicle landed on its side and caught fire.
Turlock firefighters responded to the scene; one crew extinguished the fire while another worked to extricate a 37-year-old Escalon man and his 6-year-old son from the Tesla.
Beltran was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Tesla driver was hospitalized with major injuries, and his son had moderate injuries.
