The city of Modesto has several job openings for hourly positions, some of which require only being in high school with a work permit.

These part-time positions require little to no work experience and have age requirements ranging from high school age to 18 years old. The hours are capped at less than 1,000 per year.

After-school program leader

  • Department: Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods
  • Salary: $16.16 to $19.64 per hour
  • Minimum age: 18

After-school program leaders supervise and provide academic assistance to students in the program.

Intern (paid or unpaid)

  • Department: Multiple
  • Salary: Volunteer or $15.50 to $21.68 per hour
  • Minimum age: High school student with work permit

Interns perform a wide variety of tasks depending on assignment, including providing technical support, administrative responsibilities or field work.

This is a continuous application with no closing date.

Lifeguard/Swim instructor

  • Department: Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods
  • Salary: $16.56 to $20.13 per hour
  • Minimum age: 15

Lifeguards and swim instructors maintain constant surveillance of patrons in swimming pool facilities and lead swimming lessons.

Recreation leader

  • Department: Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods
  • Salary: $15.50 to $18.85 per hour
  • Minimum age: 16 to 18, depending on assignment

Recreation leaders are employed in programs including sports programs, day camp programs, park programs and the Maddux Youth Center Facility.

Service and maintenance aide

  • Department: Multiple
  • Salary: $15.50 to $18.85 per hour
  • Minimum age: 18

Service and maintenance aides provide unskilled/semi-skilled labor and maintenance work in divisions including including parks, streets, community forestry, graffiti abatement, building services and water operations.

Service worker

  • Department: Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods
  • Salary: $15.50 to $18.85 per hour
  • Minimum age: 18

Service workers perform semi-skilled labor tasks involving the setup, cleanup and maintenance of various events at Modesto Centre Plaza or other venues as assigned.
