Paving begins on 3 miles of Briggsmore and Orangeburg in Modesto. What drivers can expect
New pavement is coming soon to a two-mile stretch of Briggsmore Avenue and one mile of the less-traveled Orangeburg Avenue.
A reader asked our service journalism team for an update on a $7.25 million project. It started last summer and also includes a short stretch of new sidewalk in the airport district.
Here’s the latest from the city of Modesto:
The Orangeburg stretch is between Coffee and Oakdale roads. It is scheduled to be paved on Wednesday and Thursday, June 21-22, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. It has only one lane each way, so drivers should expect alternating closures.
The work on the four-lane Briggsmore is between McHenry Avenue and Oakdale Road. It is expected to have lane closures from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Tuesday, June 28, to allow grinding of the old pavement. Information on when the new surface will be laid was not available.
Briggsmore also is getting traffic detectors in the pavement to help with signal timing. This requires nighttime construction through Thursday of this week.
The project, which runs to August, also will eliminate a tricky turn pocket from westbound Briggsmore into the McHenry Village shopping center. Both Orangeburg and Briggsmore will get new curb ramps for wheelchairs, along with more visible crosswalks.
The city hired United Pavement Maintenance Inc., based in Hughson, for the project. It is funded by the Measure L sales tax.
The airport neighborhood portion involves new sidewalks on Empire Avenue between Tenaya and Lapham drives. The asphalt roadway is scheduled to be repaved Friday.
The neighborhood just got another $6.1 million worth of sidewalks and bike paths through a project at Stanislaus County Public Works. It oversees unincorporated areas.
The neighborhood has lacked sidewalks on many blocks since its founding around 1940 by Dust Bowl migrants. Roughly a quarter of the area is still without them.
