The body found inside a Modesto irrigation canal on Monday has been identified as a 71-year-old Modesto woman.

Fannie Holmes, 71, was found at about 10:30 a.m. in the canal, roughly 75 yards from the bridge that connects the Virginia Corridor Trail to Stoddard Avenue. There were about three inches of rainwater in the canal.

Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said an autopsy of Holmes conducted Tuesday showed no signs of trauma or any indication of a crime. She said the cause of death is pending toxicology results.

Bear said Holmes lived in Modesto but not in the area where she was found.
