Passenger killed in crash near Dry Creek identified as teenager
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office has identified a woman who died when the vehicle she was riding in crashed down a Dry Creek embankment Saturday.
Alejandra Ortiz-Acho, 18, was a passenger in a gray pickup driven by her 22-year-old sister that was traveling south on Coffee Road, which ends at a T-intersection with Scenic Drive.
Sgt. Eric Schuller said the pickup traveled through the intersection, into a parking lot on the other side, then down an embankment toward Dry Creek.
The vehicle hit a tree, trapping Ortiz-Acho and the driver inside.
Modesto Fire crews stabilized the pickup, extricated the women — which took more than an hour — and used a low-angle rope system to carry them to the road.
Ortiz-Acho was pronounced dead at the scene and her sister, whose name and age have not been released, suffered major injuries. Schuller said the sisters recently moved to Stanislaus County.
Speed is suspected to be a factor in the collision. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors, according to Modesto police.
Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Traffic Safety Unit at 209-572-9592.
