Modesto man killed in suspected DUI-related collision in Fremont

A Modesto resident was killed in a collision on Monday night in Fremont, according to the East Bay Area city’s police department.

The deadly collision took place at the intersection of Niles Boulevard and Hillview Drive around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 6. The first driver involved, a 19-year-old man from Fremont, suffered injuries and was treated at a trauma center. The second driver, from Modesto, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was identified by the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau as Eric Mora, 54, from Modesto.

Investigators suspect alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. Information on which party was under the influence will be released once toxicology tests are completed, Fremont police Sgt. Kim Macdonald told The Bee.

According to the release, Mora was traveling east and making a left turn onto Niles Boulevard as the other driver was heading south on Niles toward the T-shaped intersection. Officers have not determined who is at fault for the crash, Macdonald said.

The Fremont man was able to free himself from the wreck and waited by his car, police said. The Fremont Fire Department got Mora out of the vehicle he was driving and attempted to save him.

The incident was the city of Fremont’s first fatal traffic collision of 2023, the release said.

The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Alex Gregory at agregory@fremont.gov or by calling the Fremont Police Department at 510-790-6800.
