Ceres resident dies after being hit by two vehicles on Modesto’s Kiernan Avenue
A 20-year-old Ceres man died Tuesday night after being hit by two vehicles on Kiernan Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 8:22 p.m., a 30-year-old Modesto woman was driving a GMC Acadia in the left lane of eastbound Kiernan, east of Carver Road, in an area with no street lights, said CHP officer Ming Hsu.
“She suddenly observed a pedestrian walking in the traffic lane directly in front of her,” he said.
The woman was unable to avoid the pedestrian and the left front of her vehicle struck him.
Hsu said the driver immediately pulled over. Her passenger got out of the vehicle and was walking toward the pedestrian to check on him when a second vehicle hit him.
Hsu said, based on the collision damage, investigators believe the pedestrian rose to his feet just before being hit by a Toyota Corolla driven by a 17-year-old Modesto resident.
The teen also immediately pulled over and both drivers cooperated with investigators, Hsu said.
The 20-year-old pedestrian, whose name was not available Wednesday morning, was taken to an area hospital, where he died several hours later.
