Pedestrian killed near Davis High School identified as Modesto man
A Modesto man who was fatally hit by a vehicle near Davis High School last week was walking back from a gas station after his vehicle ran out of gas, according to police.
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 58-year-old Tony Franco.
Franco was struck and killed just before 10 p.m. Thursday as he was attempting to cross Tully Road near the high school.
Franco had run out of gas on Tully, north of Mt. Vernon Drive, and walked to the AM/PM about a mile away at Tully and Bowen Avenue, said Modesto police Sgt. Kalani Souza. Franco was nearly back to his vehicle and crossing the street to get to it when he was hit, Souza said. He died at the scene.
A GoFundMe says Franco was a father to two sons.
The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation. DUI is not suspected and Franco was not in a crosswalk, Souza said.
