Driver killed in fiery crash after veering off Highway 99 in Keyes, CHP reports

California Highway Patrol

An SUV driver was killed early Saturday when his vehicle went off Highway 99 in Keyes, struck a tree and caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle crash occurred about 12:55 a.m. A CHP news release says the Toyota RAV4 was southbound on the highway near Keyes Road.

The SUV went off the west edge of the road and into a dirt and grass area before crashing. The occupant was found in the rear area of the Toyota and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news release said it has not been determined whether drugs or alcohol factored in the crash. It says conditions were foggy and cold.

The identity of the driver — even whether he was an adult or juvenile — had not been determined as of later Saturday morning.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have seen the driver and vehicle beforehand, is asked to call the CHP Modesto office at 209-545-7440.
