Steel beams have reached six stories on Modesto’s new courthouse. When will it open?
The new Stanislaus Superior Courthouse has risen into public view after a year of mostly foundation work.
Steel beams now reach as high as six stories out of the eight to be built over the next two years in downtown Modesto.
The building will occupy most of the block bounded by Ninth, G, 10th and H streets. It will consolidate operations now in the current courthouse on 12th Street and several satellite locations.
The $345 million project is funded by the Judicial Council of California. It hired McCarthy Building Companies Inc., based in St. Louis, for the job.
Completion is expected in January 2025, a month later than the previous schedule, council spokesman Blaine Corren said Friday. The contractor has not encountered any major issues, he said.
The building will have 27 courtrooms, along with better security and other amenities than the current courthouse, which dates to 1960. It will rise eight stories on the Ninth Street side and three at the main entrance on 10th.
The city of Modesto is considering dense housing at the current courthouse and the adjacent jail, which no longer houses inmates.
