Talk on Ken Burns’ Holocaust documentary set for Modesto. Where, when to join
Modesto’s Congregation Beth Shalom will host a panel discussion on the Ken Burns documentary series “The US and the Holocaust.”
The discussion is open to the public and set for Sunday, Oct. 30.
The six-hour film has been shown on PBS and currently is available for streaming, according to a press release from CBS Rabbi Shalom Bochner.
“When I began to receive a large number of questions about the new Ken Burns documentary, both from our synagogue members and from other folks who live in the area, it became very clear that this was an educational opportunity for us to discuss this important new film and the questions that it brings up with a panel of experts,” Bochner said.
“This documentary not only explains a fuller story of what led to the Holocaust 80 years ago but has a great deal to contribute to our understanding of current events and the political tensions in our country.”
Speakers are set to include Rabbi Chaim Singer-Frankes, former archivist at Steven Speilberg’s Shoah Foundation, and Bret Carroll, history professor at California State University, Stanislaus. Closing remarks will be by Ellen Junn, president of CSUS, and Bochner will moderate the panel.
The free discussion is planned for 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at Congregation Beth Shalom, 1705 Sherwood Ave., Modesto.
Attendees are encouraged to watch the film first and then take questions to the panelists. See www.pbs.org.
