Modesto pedestrian badly hurt when struck by 75 mph pickup on Highway 99
A Modesto man suffered major injuries when struck by a pickup truck Saturday night on Highway 99 in Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The collision occurred around 9:30 p.m. on southbound 99 north of the Carpenter Road/Briggsmore Avenue overpass.
A Modesto Fire Department incident summary says a pedestrian later identified as 22-year-old Christian Martinez was found lying on the shoulder of the highway. He was treated at the scene and taken by an AMR crew to a local hospital.
The preliminary investigation by the CHP found that Samuel Melo, 29 of Patterson, was driving a 2017 Ford pickup south in the fast lane at a stated speed of 75 mph.
Martinez was on the west shoulder when for unknown reasons he ran into the traffic lanes and into the path of the pickup. He was struck by the front left of the Ford.
Melo was wearing his seat belt and was determined not to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
CHP Modesto office spokesman Officer Tom Olsen said he had no update Sunday morning on Martinez’s condition.
