Amtrak and ACE keep rolling near Modesto thanks to deal with rail workers
Amtrak and the Altamont Corridor Express will remain in service thanks to a tentative deal with rail workers.
The systems had planned to shut down Friday, Sept. 16, if freight workers carried out a strike threat. They both use freight tracks but could not do so if the engineers and conductors were not on the job.
The Amtrak San Joaquins line has five daily round trips between Bakersfield and Oakland, including stations in Modesto and Denair. A sixth trip branches north to Sacramento.
Amtrak is still running on a slightly reduced schedule Thursday because the labor agreement had not been reached in time. It canceled the Sacramento train but still has all five Oakland trips.
ACE has four weekday round trips between Stockton and San Jose, including stations in Lathrop/Manteca and Tracy. The looming strike threat prompted ACE to cancel the two later trains in both the morning and evening Thursday.
ACE runs on Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Amtrak uses both UP and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
Both passenger lines will have normal service Friday. Riders can find details at www.amtrak.com and www.acerail.com.
