Update: Mandatory evacuations lifted in wildfire near Sonora

Update, 4:05 p.m.: Authorities lifted the mandatory evacuation orders as of 4 p.m. Friday.

Firefighters are battling a blaze that broke out Thursday evening in the Sonora area, prompting evacuation orders.

The Woods fire was reported at 8:40 p.m. at Highway 108 and Stockton Road.

As of Friday morning, the fire was measured at 21 acres and 10 percent containment, according to the CalFire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit.

“Intensive and aggressive work overnight by firefighters has led to the forward progress of the fire being stopped,” the department said in a post on its Facebook page Friday morning. “Firefighters will continue to construct and strengthen established containment lines throughout the day. Damage assessment is ongoing.”

According to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department., mandatory evacuations are in place on the following roads: North Drive, Fairway, Outlook Drive, Martha Lane, Golden Dove, Silver Pine, Circle Lane, Alley Drive, Chabroullian Lane, Constance Lane, Golf Links Road east of Chabroullian, Mountain Vista Court and McKibbin. Evacuation warnings were issued in the following areas: Golf Links Road west of Chabroullian, Gibbs Drive, Jamestown Road, Racetrack Road, Ponderosa Drive, Cottage Court, Woodside Drive

Stockton Road was closed from Highway 108 to Ponderosa Way. Highway 108 is closed at Golf Links Road. And Golf Links Road is closed at Chabroullian.

An evacuation center has been set up at the Posse Grounds, 19130 Rawhide Road. And an animal shelter is available at Tuolumne County Animal Control, 10040 Victoria Way.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
