Campaign for Modesto’s sales tax makes it debut by announcing endorsements

The campaign for Modesto’s 1% sales tax on the Nov. 8 made its official debut Thursday in an event in the plaza at Tenth Street Place, the city-county government center in downtown.

The campaign announced the Measure H sales tax has been endorsed by the city’s five labor groups as well as the Modesto and Central Valley Hispanic chambers of commerce and Opportunity Stanislaus.

The City Council voted 6-0 in June to put the 1% sales tax on the ballot.

The tax requires a simple majority to pass. If approved by voters, city officials say Measure H would bring in $39 million annually to the city’s $171 million general fund.

The tax can be spent on any service the city provides, but city officials say the tax will be spent on such basics as improving public safety, addressing homelessness and ensuring that parks and other public spaces are clean, safe and well-maintained.

The council also would form a community oversight board to report on how the city is spending Measure H.
