Two men suffer major injuries in crash on homemade motorcycles east of Modesto
Two men suffered major injuries, one life-threatening, when they crashed head-on riding homemade motorcycles east of Modesto on Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The men were riding on La Coste Lane, in front of Alice Stroud Elementary School and east of Claus Road, at 1:48 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
A witness saw one of the motorcyclists make a U-turn at Frazine Road, “take off westbound (on La Coste) and then they saw the bike fly up in the air,” said CHP Officer Tom Olsen. “When they drove up to the scene, they saw two people on the ground.”
Olsen said the motorcyclist who made the U-turn, 26-year-old Modesto resident Antonio Molina Ramos, crashed head-on with the other motorcyclist. It is unknown who was in the wrong lane.
Both of the men suffered major injuries; the second rider, who has not yet been identified, suffered life-threatening internal injuries, Olsen said.
He said the motorcycles the men were riding were homemade and not street legal. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
The collision remains under investigation, including whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
