A single-vehicle crash early Sunday in Modesto caused at least moderate injuries to the driver and is expected to cause traffic congestion at the Carpenter Road and Kansas Avenue intersection, authorities report. The traffic signal pole needs to be replaced.

Fire crews, police and emergency medical services responded at about 1:40 a.m. to the intersection on a report of a crash with possible entrapment.

The Modesto Fire Department incident summary says the patient was not trapped and was taken to a local hospital. The summary calls the driver’s injuries major, but Modesto police Lt. Joe Bottoms said they are moderate.

Bottoms said the driver — identified Sunday only as female — struck the signal light pole, which broke in half and landed on her vehicle.

There were no exposed wires, the lieutenant said, but a public works crew had to arrive before the car could be moved and towed.

A temporary signal has been installed while the pole is replaced, Bottoms said. “We expect some traffic congestion because a flashing light is not that great” at keeping the flow of vehicles moving, he said.
