Man found dead in canal by Virginia Corridor identified as Modesto resident

The man who was found dead in a central Modesto canal last weekend has been identified as a 35-year-old Modesto resident.

At about 7 a.m. July 23, a person taking a walk spotted the body of James Marasco near a grate in the canal that runs parallel to the Virginia Corridor Trail at Morris Avenue.

Authorities said Marasco died of an apparent drowning and no foul play is suspected. Information was not available about how Marasco came to be in the water.
