One man died and another man was seriously injured in a head-on crash on Highway 108 in Sonora on Sunday evening, authorities said.

A 41-year-old Sonora man was driving a Mitsubishi Mirage west on Highway 108 around 5 p.m. when for unknown reasons he allowed the vehicle to travel into the westbound lanes near Old Wards Ferry Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Mitsubishi crashed head-on with an eastbound Lexus driven by 72-year-old Bruce Krejcik of Tuolumne.

The 41-year-old Mitsubishi driver was not wearing a seat belt and succumbed to his injuries, according to the CHP. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

Krejcik suffered major injuries and was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Sonora Area CHP office at 209-984-3944.
