Passenger killed when car, big rig collide near Newman
One person died and another was injured when their car collided with a big rig outside of Newman Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred at West Stuhr and Eastin Roads and was reported at 10:24 a.m., the CHP said in a news release.
Rachel Norton, 22, of Riverbank was driving a 2015 Toyota south on Stuhr Road when the car stopped at the intersection before it entered directly into the path of a Peterbilt tractor trailer driven east on Stuhr by Daniel Forte, 58, of Los Banos, the CHP said.
Stuhr does not have a stop sign at the intersection, the CHP said.
The front of the Peterbilt struck the right side of the Toyota, the CHP said. The impact sent the Toyota off the roadway, where it overturned before coming to rest on its wheels.
A female passenger in the Toyota, whose name, age and hometown were not released, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Norton was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries. Forte was not hurt, the CHP said.
All occupants were wearing their seat belts. Authorities do not yet know whether drugs and/or alcohol contributed to the crash.
