Modesto police: Child in wagon struck by pickup is 2-year-old girl. She had leg injury
The child whose wagon was struck Monday by a pickup truck pulling out of a parking lot in downtown Modesto is a 2-year-old girl and complained of leg pain, according an update from the Police Department.
Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said Tuesday the girl was taken by medical helicopter for care. The police earlier had said the injuries were not life-threatening. An update on the girl’s condition was not available.
The accident was a couple of blocks from the route for the Independence Day Parade. The parade had ended and people were leaving. The annual Modesto Kiwanis Club and city parade drew thousands of people to downtown. But police could not say whether the people involved in the accident had attended the parade.
Still, Parade Chairman Jeremiah Williams said it’s important that people be cautious when returning to their vehicles. He noted the city’s annual Celebration of Lights parade is coming up in a few months. And he thanked everyone for coming out Monday.
Bear said the accident occurred in the 700 block of 15th Street, which is near 15th and G streets. Police have said the accident was reported at about 11:20 a.m. Bear said the driver of an F-150 pickup was leaving a parking lot.
“The driver waited for a group of pedestrians to cross the driveway exit,” Bear said in a text. “The driver stated he began to exit once he thought the group had completed crossing, and he began to pull out. He struck the wagon carrying a 2-year-old child in it.”
Information on the type of wagon and who was pulling it was not available.
Bear said the driver was found at fault for failing to yield before entering the road. Information on whether the driver was cited was not immediately available.
