The driver and 15-year-old passenger killed in a crash near Westley on Saturday night have been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Driver Jazmin Vargas, 26, and her niece, 15-year-old Daniela Orozco, were involved in a solo vehicle crash on eastbound Howard Road where it makes a nearly 90-degree turn to the north at Frank Cox Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Vargas was traveling too fast to negotiate the turn in the road. The Chevrolet Cobalt they were in left the road in a northeasterly direction and hit a dirt berm.

Vargas and Orozco, both San Jose residents, died from their injuries at the scene. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
