An elderly woman died Tuesday evening following a crash that pushed her vehicle into a canal west of Modesto.

The woman, who has not been identified but is believed to be about 80, was driving a red Kia south on Gates Road and stopped at a stop sign at Highway 132 just before 8 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Ming Hsu.

When she proceeded into the intersection, she was hit by a gray Kia that was westbound on 132 and didn’t have a stop sign.

The impact propelled the red Kia southwest. It left the roadway and went into a canal that runs parallel to Gates and Paradise Road.

Hsu said the red Kia became submerged in the full canal. Passerby pulled the woman out of the vehicle as emergency personnel arrived on scene. He said CPR was started at the scene and the woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The driver of the gray Kia, a 25-year-old Modesto resident, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.
