Popular Northern San Joaquin Valley fireworks show canceled due to drought concerns

When water flowed abundantly through Lake Don Pedro, the annual fireworks show brought large crowds to Tuolumne County for the Fourth of July.

This year, lake officials decided to cancel the popular fireworks show, citing drought concerns that include projected lake level.

“Now in our third year of drought conditions, we have had to make the unfortunate decision to not host the annual fireworks show this year,” the Don Pedro Recreation Agency said in a statement. “The safety of our guests and being good stewards of the land entrusted to us are our highest priorities.”

The “Fireworks on the Water” event was canceled in 2014 due to droughts and vulnerable fire conditions but returned in 2017.

The organization welcomed fans on land and in boats on the water to celebrate the event’s 50th anniversary last year on July 3.

If drought conditions improve in years to come, the Agency expects to host spectators for an Independence Day celebration in the future, saying, “We look forward to bringing the show back in the future years, when we are confident it is safe to do so.”
