Update: Highway 99 reopened at Crows Landing exit after afternoon semi crash

All lanes of southbound Highway 99 in Modesto are open following cleanup of a semi crash that briefly closed the roadway, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday afternoon.

The semi driver was traveling south around 1:45 p.m., hauling a flatbed trailer loaded with panes of glass, CHP Officer Tom Olsen said. The driver told investigators the load of glass came loose, causing him to lose control.

Glass shattered all over the roadway, and the front tractor went off the road and onto the embankment. The driver, a 48-year-old out of Shafter, was uninjured.

He told investigators he was traveling the posted 55 mph speed limit for semis, Olsen said.

Drivers were asked to avoid the road while Caltrans did cleanup.
