This downtown Modesto bridge will close over the weekend to aid in 132 construction

The Needham Street overpass in downtown Modesto will close for 58 hours starting at 7 p.m. Friday, June 3.
The closure will allow crews to connect the overpass to the new alignment of Highway 132. Drivers will use detours on several nearby streets until 5 a.m. Monday.
The overpass runs between the west end of Needham and the east end of Kansas Avenue. It takes traffic over Ninth Street and the Union Pacific Railroad.
The 132 project will shift three miles of the state highway off Maze Boulevard to a corridor just south of Kansas. The Needham overpass was completed in 2004 in anticipation of its eventual connection to 132.
The weekend detour involves Eighth, Ninth, 11th, K, L and O streets. A map and other project information are at www.stateroute132.com.
“The project team thanks you for your patience and for driving cautiously through the construction areas,” an online alert said.
Bay Cities Paving & Grading of Concord is rerouting 132 on a $92 million contract. Work started in late 2019 and is expected to be done later this year. The city put a mix of local, state and federal money into the project.
It will provide one traffic lane each way and a median from Dakota Avenue to Needham. A future phase would expand the expressway to four lanes, if the funding is secured. It also could stretch another five miles west to Gates Road.
