The Oregon mom who died in a crash on Interstate 5 near Gustine on Friday has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Sherrell McClain-Newton, 51 of Springfield, Oregon, was driving in a Toyota Prius with her 10-year-old daughter on southbound Interstate 5 Friday when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway.

The Prius overturned multiple times near the State Route 140 exit and landed on its wheels on the right side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

McClain-Newton died at the scene and her daughter, who was in the front passenger seat, was flown to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera.

CHP spokeswoman Tom Olsen said Monday that the girl suffered major internal injuries but he did not have an update on her condition.

Both mother and daughter were wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
