Oregon woman dies, girl injured in single-vehicle rollover crash on I-5 near Gustine

An Oregon woman died Friday afternoon and a girl was injured when their car left southbound Interstate 5 and overturned multiple times, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP officers were called around 1:30 p.m. to an area just north of the State Route 140 exit, west of Gustine, CHP Officer Tom Olsen said. They found a Toyota Prius that was off the right side of the road.

An initial investigation showed a 51-year-old woman from Springfield, Oregon, was driving the car when it left the roadway for unknown reasons and flipped over multiple times before landing back in its wheels. A girl, around 10, was in the front passenger seat.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the girl was airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital, Olsen said. She had no visible injuries but was in and out of consciousness.

The relationship between the two people is not known at this time.

Both were wearing seat belts, Olsen said. CHP is still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
