Wind creates a problem for agencies responding to orchard fire in Stanislaus County

A fire Sunday in an abandoned almond orchard near Patterson burned more than 100 acres before it was brought under control.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 5:20 p.m. to the wind-driven fire that swept through dry grass and denuded trees at Zacharias and Raines Road, northwest of Patterson.

The West Stanislaus Fire Protection District was assisted by fire agencies from across the county. Smoke from the blaze in western Stanislaus County was seen for miles, according to a Facebook post by the the Newman Firefighter Association. Officials have not identified the cause of the fire.
