Driver of solo vehicle crash near Turlock identified as Hughson man

The Hughson man who died in a solo vehicle crash east of Turlock early Sunday morning has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Matthew Staack, 32, was driving a 2020 Dodge Durango north on Vincent Road, just north of East Avenue, at high speed when he veered off the west edge of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Staack overcorrected, the CHP said, and then went off the east edge of the road, where the Dodge hit a power pole and then continued into an orchard. It overturned and hit multiple trees before coming to rest on its roof.

At some point during the crash, Staack — who was not wearing his seat belt — was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
