Memorial services for Stockton Fire Capt. Max Fortuna took place Tuesday.

Services included only the Fortuna family and friends, Stockton Fire Department personnel and their families, active and retired members of fire service and law enforcement agencies from throughout the state, and invited guests.

Fortuna, who lived in Modesto, was shot and killed while battling a garbage bin fire in downtown Stockton last week.

The public was invited to watch the procession immediately following the memorial service, the Stockton Police Department said.

Thousands of firefighters were on hand, coming from as far away as Minnesota. A fire ambassador from France also attended.

Several local agencies lined up on overpasses along Highway 99 as the procession to the funeral got under way.

The procession departed from Center and Fremont streets between. It proceeded from Fremont Street, down Center Street to Weber Avenue; Weber Avenue to Madison Street; Madison to Washington Street.
