Winter weather returns to Stanislaus County and the foothills. Cold temps and rain

National Weather Service Sacramento

Residents of the Northern San Joaquin Valley can expect cold overnight temperatures through Monday morning and rain next week leading up to Christmas Day.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a return to winter weather in the Valley, the Sierra foothills and mountains.

Valley temperatures will drop into the 30s overnight Saturday and Sunday, posing a risk to pets and sensitive plants. A low temperature of 37 degrees is projected for Modesto early Sunday and Monday mornings. Patchy fog is expected Saturday and Sunday night.

The Weather Service said a storm will move into the region Monday night, with widespread rain predicted Tuesday through Friday.

Snow levels in the mountains will range from 3,000 to 4,000 feet Tuesday and rise to 4,500 to 5,500 feet Wednesday, the Weather Service said. Traffic conditions will include slick roads; holiday travel delays are possible.

The winter conditions are likely to continue through the Christmas weekend.

The Modesto area was drying out after a three-day storm that brought 2.25 inches of rain.

The precipitation this month has pushed the season rainfall total in Modesto to 6.35 inches, according to Modesto Irrigation District.
