The pedestrian killed Tuesday evening when struck by a vehicle at a Paradise Road intersection in west Modesto was 39-year-old Johnathan Washington, according to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office. A deputy there said Washington appears to have been a Modesto resident, but that was not certain.

Modesto Police Department officers responded around 5:45 p.m. to the five-way intersection of Paradise Road, Beverly Drive and Wade and Harris avenues for a pedestrian who had been seriously injured in a collision, Sgt. Dan Starr said. Signal lights control traffic at the intersection.

Washington was taken by ambulance to a hospital but died either there or en route. The driver remained on scene after the crash and was cooperating with the police, Starr said. The cause of the crash was unclear Tuesday night.

MPD spokeswoman Sharon Bear said by text Wednesday that Washington apparently “was crossing the street in the path of traffic,” as opposed to walking along the edge of the roadway.

Starr said Modesto-area fatal collisions have been “through the roof” lately. He said drivers can help prevent these crashes by reducing their speed and making sure to watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists.
