Update: Speed, fog, appear to factor in fatal crash in Tuolumne County, CHP reports
A 57-year-old man was killed in a car crash early Sunday morning in Tuolumne County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Just after 2:30 a.m., officers were called to the area west of Jamestown for a report of a sedan on its roof in a field off Green Springs Road.
The only thing making the vehicle visible from the road were its headlights, according to the CHP.
The preliminary investigation found that the driver was eastbound on Highway 120 east of Green Springs Road, apparently at high speed, CHP Sgt. Adam Croxton said later Sunday morning. Conditions were foggy and the driver was at the onset of a curve when he allowed his car to leave the road.
The sedan overturned multiple times, and the driver was not wearing his seat belt. Croxton said. The man was alone in his car.
The coroner was called to the scene about 30 minutes after the crash was reported.
The driver’s name was withheld pending notification of family. His license shows a Copperopolis address, but that’s not yet confirmed as his last residence, Croxton said.
