Names of Note: In-Shape, Save Mart aid two causes. FAA honors Turlock-area farmer

In-Shape Health Clubs raised $100,000 through its seventh annual campaign against cancer.

The Stockton-based chain gave the money to local chapters of the American Cancer Society and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

In-Shape has 44 locations, including several in Stanislaus County. The campaign included fitness events, social media and a company donation for every new member in October.

The chain has raised a total of $576,000 over the seven years. St. Jude’s operates from its Memphis headquarters with partners around the nation. The Cancer Society does research, patient support, education and other work.

Save Mart helps with wildfires

The American Red Cross got about $63,000 for wildfire relief from shoppers at Save Mart and affiliated stores.

The Modesto-based grocery chain asked customers to donate at stores that operate under the Save Mart, Lucky California and FoodMaxx banners.

The Red Cross has been providing shelter, food, health services and more to people affected by wildfires in California and beyond. The needs go on despite recent storms that have eased the emergency, a news release from the company said.

“Through their continued support of our important work and the incredible generosity of so many customers, communities are cared for and strengthened during disasters,” said Christopher Losavio, executive director for the Heart of the Valley Chapter of the Red Cross.

Staying safe in the sky

Turlock-area farmer Randy Fiorini, a long-time leader on water issues, now has an award for what he has done in the air.

The Federal Aviation Administration gave him the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. It goes to pilots who have had at least 50 years of accident-free flying in civilian and/or military aircraft, among other criteria.

Fiorini’s first solo flight was in a Cessna 150 from Bettencourt Flying Service near Atwater in 1969. He now flies a Beechcraft Bonanza and a Piper J3 Cub.

Fiorini grows almonds and has served on the Turlock Irrigation District board and the Delta Stewardship Council, among other leadership roles.

And finally ...

Modesto’s Building Safety Division has been awarded the 2021 Innovations in Code Administration Award from the International Code Council for its Plan Check With Us program.

The program centralizes plans electronically so the applicant and city departments are working on the same version and can see all comments and issues in real time, according to a city news release.

Susan Dowty, a regional ICC official, presented Modesto with its award at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
