The Modesto Bee is expanding its bilingual coverage. Tell us more about what you want to know
The Modesto Bee is working hard to better cover the rich diversity of our region.
Over the past year and a half, McClatchy’s California newsrooms have hired three reporters committed to deepening reporting about the Central Valley’s Latino communities. Nadia Lopez reports for The Fresno Bee and the Central Valley News Collaborative; Kim Bojórquez reports for The Sacramento Bee’s Capitol Bureau; and Andrea Briseño reports on equity and underserved communities for The Modesto Bee’s Economic Mobility Lab.
The three reporters have also launched a weekly newsletter — called La Abeja, or The Bee in Spanish — that features their stories for and about the Valley’s Latino communities.
But the reporters’ stellar work has only been accessible to English-speakers in the community — until now. With more than a quarter of California adults over age 18 speaking Spanish at home, we knew we needed to ensure our reporting reached more Valley residents.
As of this month, you’ll find more reports in Spanish at www.modbee.com/noticias-en-espanol/. There, you can read top stories of the day, news you can use and in-depth reporting from around California and in your community.
We know that translating stories is just one step toward better serving our entire community. So we want to hear from you: What types of stories about the region’s Latino communities do you want to read in English and Spanish? And how do you prefer to get your news?
