A 24-year-old man from Michigan died on Wednesday after his car went off the road and hit a tree near Groveland in Tuolumne County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The man, whose name wasn’t released pending notification of his family, was driving a 2001 Altima west on Highway 120 near Ferretti Road at about 3:10 p.m. when for unknown reasons he allowed the car to go off the road to the right, authorities said.

“Before the driver could bring his vehicle back onto the roadway, it crashed into a tree,” the CHP said in a news release.

The accident occurred about 24 miles west of Yosemite National Park.

After hitting the tree, the car came to rest on its wheels. The driver died at the scene.

Authorities said the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. They had not yet determined whether drugs and/or alcohol were a factor.
