A vigil Sunday in west Modesto honored the nine people who were shot to death in an African-American church in Charleston, S.C., last week. First Christian Methodist Episcopal Church hosted the gathering, which also drew members of College Avenue Congregational Church, Central Baptist Church, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stanislaus County and Clinton Chapel. Participants recited the names of the victims and released balloons in their memory.
