Man fatally struck by train in Modesto identified as Newman resident

The man who died after being hit by a train in downtown Modesto on Tuesday was identified as a 33-year-old Newman man.

Authorities said Orlando Zapien for unknown reasons walked onto the path of the southbound freight train at Eighth and I streets around 10:15 a.m.

Zapien died at the scene.
