MPD warns of recent scam involving callers who are impersonating department
Modesto Police are warning residents of a scam in which a caller will say he or she is working with MPD and the Social Security Administration investigating fraud involving the victim’s information.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, a department official said it would never request a caller’s bank information or ask them to purchase gift cards.
“The victim is then advised that they are on a conference call with an employee from MPD and then they are asked to purchase gift cards and to share the numbers off of the gift cards with the caller,” MPD wrote in a post.
If you receive suspicious calls that claim to be the department, MPD said to “call our agency to verify” before providing any personal information.
The department’s main number is 209-572-9500.
