ATV rider airlifted with major injuries after crash at La Grange off-road park
A Contra Costa County man was airlifted with major injuries after a collision at the La Grange Off-Highway Vehicle Park on Saturday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash between a 2006 Yamaha Raptor all-terrain vehicle and a 2011 Honda Pilot occurred at 4:10 p.m., CHP spokesman Officer Thomas Olsen said Monday.
Tracy resident Steven Hamilton, 37, was driving the Pilot west on one of the two-lane entrance roads to the park, traveling at low speed, Olsen said. Where there’s a bend in the road, San Pablo resident Jose Maganabaez, 21, was riding the quad at high speed. He had crossed the double yellow lines in the road and was heading east in the westbound lane, Olsen said.
The left front of the Raptor struck the left front of the Pilot, he said, and Maganabaez was ejected from his vehicle, struck the windshield of the SUV and then fell onto the ground.
The rider was not wearing a helmet, which is required by state law on public property for riders of ATVs, Olsen said. Maganabaez suffered fractures, lacerations and abrasions and after being stabilized on scene was taken by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Hamilton suffered a laceration to his arm, and his 4-year-old passenger in the rear seat was uninjured, Olsen said.
Alcohol and drugs were determined not to be factors in the crash, the officer said.
