Two households displaced by fire at east Modesto apartment complex
Seven people were displaced by a fire Sunday night that left two apartments uninhabitable, the Modesto Fire Department reported.
Modesto, Ceres and Stanislaus Consolidated fire crews were dispatched at 11:45 p.m. to the report of the structure fire on the 500 block of Lincoln Avenue, just south of the Creekside Golf Course in east Modesto.
The first crew on scene found a two-story apartment fully involved, with the fire extending to an adjacent unit, Modesto Battalion Chief Jesse Nicasio said. A second alarm was sounded, bringing additional engines.
Police officers already were on the scene, evacuating surrounding apartments. Nicasio said the entire wing — about eight units — is two-story apartments.
Firefighters searched for any occupants. One person was evaluated by American Medical Response for possible smoke inhalation, according to Nicasio’s incident summary.
The cause and origin of the blaze remain under investigation, Nicasio said, but the apartment where it apparently began suffered major damage. Crews were able to stop the spread in the second unit, which suffered moderate damaged, he said. “We had to pull down some ceiling to prevent its progress into the attic.”
The battalion chief said he believes that between the two units, four adults and three children were displaced and received aid from the American Red Cross.
The Turlock Fire Department assisted with coverage elsewhere during the fire.
