Residents escape injury in east Modesto fire

Residents in an east Modesto home escaped injury after a fire broke out in their garage and spread to the house, authorities said.

Modesto Fire Department crews were called to the home in the 2600 block of Majestic Oak Drive at 8:54 p.m. on a report of an explosion at the house just west of Temescal Drive, according to Battalion Chief Andrew Hunter of the Modesto Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, they saw the garage fully engulfed. After being assured all residents were out of the home, they took a defensive approach.

“There was a large amount of fire in the garage area, and the home to (the west) was immediately threatened,” Hunter said.

After initial work, he said they entered the home to continue the attack. They did not find any other people or pets in the home.

The fire took about 45 minutes to contain. There was major damage to the home, and limited damage to the one next door.

The first alarm brought five engines and one truck. Two additional companies were also called to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There was no immediate information on the amount of damage to the single-story residence.

Hunter said it was the third structure fire fought by the department on Saturday, including the destruction of a home being built by Habitat for Humanity on Signature Court just south of Modesto Municipal Golf Course.
