Modesto and Stanislaus County will continue to keep Tenth Street Place, the downtown city-county administration center, closed to the public at least through May 18.

The city and county had closed Tenth Street Place to the public in mid-March because of the new coronavirus pandemic. Officials had considered reopening Tenth Street Place’s government offices to the public May 3 but decided that was too soon.

“(I)t has become increasingly clear that we must move that date,” City Manager Joe Lopez wrote to Modesto employees Thursday. “Our comfort level in reopening must — first and foremost — be based on whether we can keep our employees and our public safe, and whether, by reopening, we’re somehow putting the City at even greater risk of the disease.

“In coordination with the County, our new target is May 18, but that date will only stand if we can put the necessary precautions in place, and we’re developing those standards now.”

Modesto’s other public buildings, such as the senior citizens center, McHenry Museum and King-Kennedy Memorial Center, remain closed to the public.

City spokesman Thomas Reeves said Modesto’s approximately 1,200 full-time employees continue to work, including at home.
