Fire heavily damages The Grille restaurant in downtown Newman

A fire Tuesday night heavily damaged The Grille, a restaurant in downtown Newman.

The Newman Fire Department was dispatched at 10:26 p.m. to the building on the 900 block of Fresno Street, Fire Chief Keith Bowen said in a news release.

Firefighters found heavy smoke upon arrival and saw that the fire had started in the kitchen and spread to the dining area, he said. They were able to contain it before it reached a residential unit on the second floor and neighboring businesses, he said.

$250,000 damage estimate

The Stanislaus County Fire Investigations Unit estimated the damage at $250,000. The cause is not yet known.

One person was displaced by the fire. No injuries were reported.

Newman had help on the call from the Merced County Fire Department, the West Stanislaus County Fire Protection District, the Patterson Fire Department and the Mountain View Fire Protection District.
