Names of Note: Amazon offers Modesto comedy show. Prefab plant gets housing award

Amazon has premiered a video of local comedian A.J. DeMello’s performance at the Cheroot Cigar Lounge in Modesto.

He taped the routine at the downtown club March 3, before the coronavirus shut down such venues, and it is now available online.

DeMello is originally from Moss Beach, San Mateo County, and now lives in Turlock. He is part of Deaf Puppies Comedy.

Entekra wins national award

Entekra, which prefabricates wood in Modesto for home builders, received an Ivory Prize for Housing Affordability.

It came from Ivory Innovations, a center at the University of Utah that promotes home construction around the nation. Entreka won the 2020 award in the construction and design category, one of three.

Entrekra launched in Ripon in 2016 and last year completed a much larger plant on Whitmore Avenue in south Modesto. It turns out walls and floors much more efficiently than traditional framing on the home site.

“As Entekra was founded to change the way houses are built by improving construction productivity, the entire Entekra team is honored to receive this award,” CEO Gerard McCaughey said in a news release.

The 2020 winner in the finance category was Rhino, a provider of low-cost property insurance in New York City. The prize in the policy and regulatory reform arena was Symbium, a San Francisco company with a computerized means for determining whether a second dwelling is allowed on a parcel.
