Fire singes roof of Yesterday’s Books, an institution in north Modesto

A fire Monday afternoon singed the roof of Yesterday’s Books, a long-time business in north Modesto.

The Modesto Fire Department quickly controlled the flames after the call at about 3:30 p.m. on McHenry Avenue just south of Standiford Avenue.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Battalion Chief Andrew Hunter said at the scene. No injuries were reported.

The single-story building has been closed to the public under the state order aimed at controlling the coronavirus. Customers can still order online, according to a voicemail at the business.

In a post on the store’s Facebook page, the owner said she was on site filling orders when she smelled smoke. “I promise all the books are safe!”

Yesterday’s Books was founded in 1980 and has been at its current location since 1993. The website said it “boasts an inventory of over 100,000 used, new, rare and out-of-print hardbacks, paperbacks, audio books, music CDs, DVDs and sheet music.”

The business had a small attic fire in 2015 that was extinguished before it could damage the books.
