Coronavirus cases rapidly increase in Stanislaus County. Rate 3rd highest in state

Stanislaus County confirmed an additional 19 coronavirus cases on Friday, bringing the total to 206 residents who have tested positive.

The county remained on track to nearly double its cases every eight days. According to a Los Angeles Times tracker, the county on Friday had the third highest rate of transmission among counties in California, behind Riverside (doubling every 7.7 days) and Tulare (every 7.2 days).

Stanislaus, which had less than 100 positive tests only 10 days ago, has seen a rapid increase in coronavirus activity since April 8.

The county still has four deaths. Friday’s update said 92 county residents have recovered from the respiratory illness.

Almost 24 percent of COVID-19 patients in Stanislaus County, or a total of 49 people, have been hospitalized since the first cases were reported here March 11. According to data released Saturday, 40 percent of the available 1,200 beds at the five Stanislaus County hospitals were in use as of Thursday.

Statewide as of Saturday morning, the coronavirus pandemic has killed 1,057 people and 29,580 have tested positive, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Local residents who have coronavirus symptoms — fever, cough and shortness of breath — are now getting faster test results. Health officials released information earlier this week that the average turnaround time for testing is one day. Some tests are negative as seasonal flu continues to circulate.

Modesto has 79 confirmed cases, up from 67 on Tuesday, and 35 cases are in the unincorporated areas. Ceres has 27 cases, Patterson 17, Turlock 15, Riverbank nine, Newman eight, Waterford seven and Oakdale five. Hughson has fewer than five cases.

County public health attributes 116 of the infections to contact with a person who tested positive, often a family member, while 71 cases resulted from community transmission. The county has reported 14 travel-related cases.
