Highway 99 off-ramp in Modesto will close through August to aid Highway 132 rerouting

The northbound off-ramp from Highway 99 to Kansas Avenue will close through August as part of the rerouting of Highway 132 in Modesto.

The closure will begin the evening of Tuesday, April 14, and force a detour onto downtown streets, the California Department of Transportation said in an online alert.

The ramp closure is needed for construction of a bridge that will carry the new 132 segment over 99 just south of the existing Kansas bridge, a new release said. The eastern abutment for the new span will be close to this exit.

Drivers bound for Kansas on northbound 99 will have to exit onto Sixth Street. They will turn right on Washington Street, left on Eighth Street and left on Kansas.

Construction started in late 2019 on the 132 project, expected to take about three years. It will shift three miles of this state highway off Maze Boulevard. The new segment will run just south of Kansas from Dakota Avenue to Needham Street.

Bay Cities Paving & Grading Inc. of Concord is building the road on a $92.05 million contract. The funding comes from several local, state and federal sources.

A second phase, expected by 2028, will widen the new highway segment to four lanes. It eventually could stretch as far west as Gates Road.

Work is already underway on the western abutment of the new bridge, which did not require any detours.

Updates on the project are at www.stateroute132.com.
